Three Teams in Top Six Nationally

Four Gateway Conference teams are ranked in the Sports Network and ESPN/USA Today top-25 polls of Oct. 3. After nearly a three-year hiatus, Youngstown State returns to the Top 25, clocking in at No. 22 this week after beating Illinois State on Saturday. Southern Illinois (2/2), Western Kentucky (3/3), and UNI (6/7), represent the Gateway in the Top 10 in the Sports Network and ESPN/USA Today polls, respectively.

It's the first national ranking, though, for the Penguins since Oct. 21, 2002. Youngstown State is off to a 4-1 start with its only loss at I-A Pittsburgh. YSU is at Indiana State on Saturday.

Also, it marks the first time since the Sept. 13, 2004, in which four Gateway teams were ranked in the same week. Illinois State and Western Illinois are among schools receiving votes this week.

Twenty-four of the poll’s 25 teams will be in action this weekend, with four games between ranked opponents highlighting the slate. In addition to New Hampshire’s contest at William & Mary, No. 4 Montana visits No. 25 Idaho State, No. 6 Furman hosts No. 16 Appalachian State, and No. 9 Cal Poly hosts No. 12 North Dakota State.
