Valley Football Announces Players of the Week (Oct. 7)
This week's Missouri Valley Football Conference players of the week include QB Sean McGuire of Western Illinois; DE Darin Greenfield of South Dakota; PK Ryan Weese of South Dakota; TE Skyler Cavanaugh of South Dakota State; and Jacob Ohnesorge of South Dakota State.
Offense
QB Sean McGuire, Western Illinois
6-3, 228, Jr., Franklin (Wis.) High
McGuire completed 19-of-34 passes (55.9 percent) for 334 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in Western Illinois' 38-29 win at UNI. After a UNI score put the Panthers ahead 29-25 with 1:12 left, McGuire engineered a nine-play, 65 yard drive, finding Jaelon Acklin for a go-ahead 20-yard touchdown with six seconds left. In the fourth quarter alone, McGuire was 7-for-12 for 160 yards and two touchdowns. In his 20 career starts, McGuire now has 10 300-yard passing games. Over the last 14 quarters of play, McGuire is 84-for-121 (69.4 percent) for 1,187 yards, 12 touchdowns and one interception.
Defense
DE Darin Greenfield, South Dakota
6-3, 235, So., Sheldon (Iowa) High
Greenfield had seven tackles (six solo), including two sacks and another tackle-for-loss in leading the Coyotes to a 31-28 win against third-ranked Youngstown State. Both sacks led to Youngstown State punts. Greenfield and the Coyotes limited YSU to 188 yards rushing, 100 yards below its season average, and 3.8 yards per carry. Greenfield is among the national leaders with 5.0 sacks and 11.5 tackles-for-loss.

PK Ryan Weese, South Dakota
5-10, 195, Sr., Olathe (Kan.) University of Kansas
Weese drilled a 29-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining to give the Coyotes a 31-28 Dakota Days victory against third-ranked Youngstown State Saturday inside the DakotaDome. It was the first game-winning kick of his collegiate career. Weese also made good on four extra points.
Newcomer
TE Skyler Cavanaugh, South Dakota State
6-5, 235, Fr., Vail (Ariz.) Cienega High
Cavanaugh caught a season-high four passes for 53 yards and his first career touchdown as South Dakota State recorded a 49-14 home victory over Southern Illinois on Oct. 7. Cavanaugh’s touchdown covered 16 yards in the first quarter and he added a season-long 20-yard reception later in the game.
Offensive Lineman
OC Jacob Ohnesorge, South Dakota State
6-3, 295, Sr., Waunakee (Wis.) High
Ohnesorge graded at 97 percent with 12 knockdown blocks in South Dakota State’s 49-14 victory over Southern Illinois on Oct. 7. He did not allow a sack or a hit on the quarterback in a penalty-free game. Ohnesorge anchored a Jackrabbit offensive unit that racked up 584 yards of total offense, including a season-high 368 rushing yards. The Jackrabbits converted 11-of-15 third-down attempts and scored touchdowns on all five of their first-half offensive possessions.

Offense
RB Brady Mengarelli, South Dakota State -- Rushed 20 times for a career-high 220 yards and two touchdowns in South Dakota State’s 49-14 home victory over Southern Illinois. Six of Mengarelli’s rushing attempts were for 11 or more yards, including touchdowns of 28 and 32 yards.
RB Tevin McCaster, Youngstown State -- McCaster became the first Penguin since 2011 to score four rushing touchdowns in a game during YSU’s 31-28 loss at South Dakota. McCaster had a score in each quarter for the Penguins. He finished the game with 90 yards on 22 carries.
QB Easton Stick, North Dakota State -- Went 18 of 23 passing for 191 yards and a career-high four touchdowns in North Dakota State’s 52-0 win at Indiana State. He completed passes to nine different receivers, led by Darrius Shepherd’s six catches for 94 yards.
WR Shamar Jackson, South Dakota -- Set South Dakota single-game receiving records with 11 catches and 229 yards against a defense that was allowing 122 yards passing per game, third-best in the nation. Jackson recorded his first collegiate 100-yard game by halftime, grabbing seven passes for 113 yards and stoking South Dakota to a 21-14 halftime lead.
TE Elias Nissen, UNI -- Turned in a career night for the Panthers in defeat, with the tight end earning three touchdowns on three catches and 60 yards. The junior has caught four touchdowns this season, with all four coming in the last two weeks.
Defense
DL Khalen Saunders, Western Illinois -- Saunders matched a career-high with eight tackles, one for a loss and one sack in Western Illinois' 38-29 win at Northern Iowa. The St. Louis native helped the Leathernecks rack up four sacks of Panthers quarterback Eli Dunne
LB Jared Farley, UNI -- Earned a career-high 14 tackles against Western Illinois on Saturday. Of the 14 tackles for Farley, four were solos and 10 were assisted.
CB Jordan Brown, South Dakota State -- Brown recorded a team-high eight tackles (six solo) and added an interception and pass breakup in South Dakota State’s 49-14 win over Southern Illinois on Oct. 7. Brown was part of a Jackrabbit defensive unit that held SIU to 263 yards of total offense for the game, including only 106 in the first half.
DT Dalton Keene, Illinois State -- Recorded a season-high 10 tackles, recorded a sack and finished with a career-high three tackles for loss for the Redbirds against the Lumberjacks. Keene also added a pass breakup in the game for the Redbirds.
Special Teams
PK Sean Slattery, Illinois State -- Tied a career-best with three field goal makes including a career-long 51-yarder for the Redbirds against the Lumberjacks. Slattery connected from 32-yards in the second quarter and then tied the game at 6-6 with his career-long boot of 51 yards, topping his previous high of 50. He later added a 38-yarder in the third quarter
P Brady Hale, South Dakota State -- Punted two times for an average of 45.0 yards – with a long of 46 -- in the Jackrabbits’ 49-14 home win against Southern Illinois on Oct. 7. The Salukis wound up with -1 yard on punt returns on Hale’s two attempts.
PR Steve McShane, Western Illinois -- Returned three punts for 44 yards (14.7 average), including a long of 24 yards at Northern Iowa. In the running game, McShane also added 13 rushes for 56 yards and a touchdown (4.3 average). He caught three passes for 64 yards.
Newcomer
CB Tyrin Holloway, Western Illinois -- Recorded six tackles and also returned an interception 22 yards in Western Illinois' 38-29 victory at Northern Iowa. The Liberty transfer had a team-leading five solo tackles.
Offensive Line
C Jacob Judd, Western Illinois -- Graded out to a 94 percent, recorded eight knockdowns and did not give up a sack, helping Western Illinois rack up 468 yards of total offense. The Leathernecks ran for 134 yards and a touchdown as a team on a 4.3 average while Sean McGuire passed for 334 yards and three touchdowns.
LG Stetson Dagel, South Dakota -- Graded out as the top Coyote lineman (75 percent) in South Dakota’s 31-28 win against third-ranked Youngstown State Saturday inside the DakotaDome. The Coyotes rolled up 31 points and 486 total yards against a team that had allowed a total of 16 points in its last 12 quarters of play, and permitted 245 total yards on average. All four USD touchdown drives spanned 71 yards or more.
