YSU's Crenshaw Named to Jerry Rice Award Final Ballot

YSU redshirt freshman quarterback Demeatric Crenshaw is one of 23 finalists for the 2021 Stats Perform FCS Jerry Rice Award, which is presented to the national freshman player of the year in college football's Division I subdivision, the organization announced on Monday.

Crenshaw is one of five quarterbacks on the finalist list as he is joined by Texas Southern's Andrew Body, Bryant's Zevi Eckhaus, Northern Arizona's RJ Martinez and Jackson State's Shedeur Sanders.

Crenshaw started nine games for the Penguins as a redshirt freshman in 2021. He completed 97-of-156 passes for 791 yards and six touchdowns while rushing for 599 yards on 132 carries and scored seven times. His 599 yards rushing are the second most by a quarterback in school history behind Jeff Ryan's 1999 total.

In MVFC games, was 78-of-121 (64.5 percent) for 598 yards and five TDs and rushed for 449 yards on 94 attempts and had four scores. He had a quarterback school-record 195 yards rushing against Missouri State and finished with 134 against Western Illinois. 



CHICAGO – Nov. 22, 2021 –- Twenty-three finalists were announced on Monday for the 2021 Stats Perform FCS Jerry Rice Award, which is presented to the national freshman player of the year in college football’s Division I subdivision.
 
The Rice Award, now in its 11th season, is named for the legendary Hall of Fame wide receiver. Past recipients include Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp (Eastern Washington), Arizona Cardinals running back Chase Edmonds (Fordham) and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (North Dakota State).

A 50-member, national media panel will select the Rice Award winner, who will be announced on Dec. 13. To be eligible for the award, a freshman can’t have surpassed four games played in the previous academic year – similar to the NCAA’s regular redshirt rule.
 
Also this season, Stats Perform will present the Walter Payton Award (FCS offensive player of the year), Buck Buchanan Award (FCS defensive player of the year), Eddie Robinson Award (FCS coach of the year) and Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
