No. 14 Southern Illinois Defeats No. 3 Weber State In First Round of FCS Playoffs
OGDEN, Utah – Behind the late-game heroics of quarterback Stone Labanowitz and wide receiver Branson Combs, No. 14-ranked Southern Illinois came-from-behind in dramatic fashion to stun No. 3 Weber State, 34-31, in the first round of the 2021 NCAA FCS playoffs.
The No. 14-ranked Salukis (6-3) trailed 31-27 with 5:25 left to play before Labanowitz led the Salukis on an 11 play, 75-yard drive that was capped off with an eight-yard, off-balance throw to the corner of the endzone on fourth down, finding Combs for the go-ahead score with 51 seconds to play in regulation.
Weber State (5-1) managed to drive the ball down to the SIU 42-yard line with five seconds remaining before junior defensive lineman Raquan Lindsey sacked Wildcat quarterback Bronson Barron on the game's final play to seal the program's first postseason victory since 2009.
Southern Illinois will now have its sights set on a date with the No 2-ranked South Dakota State Jackrabbits in the quarterfinals on Saturday, May 1.
