This week's Missouri Valley Conference players of the week include QB Beau Brungard of Youngstown State; S Jalen Lee of South Dakota State; PK Zeke Mata of South Dakota; DB Kimal Clark of Indiana State; and OL Liam Becher of North Dakota
Offensive Player of the Week
QB Beau Brungard, Youngstown State
6-0, 215, Jr., New Middletown, Ohio
Brungard had another record-setting performance in a 40-35 come-from-behind win at Illinois State on Saturday. Brungard threw for a career-high 328 yards by completing 23-of-34 passes while rushing for 200 yards on a career-best 30 carries against the Redbirds. He accounted for five touchdowns and a school record 528 yards of total offense in the win. While no FCS comparisons of his 300-200-yard performance are readily available, he joins Jayden Daniels (LSU), Malik Cunningham (Louisville) and Marques Tuiasosopo (Washington) as Division I players to accomplish the feat in a single game in college football history. He scored on rushes of 48, two and one yards while throwing for scores of 53 and 36 in the game. It’s his second 200-plus yard rushing performance of the season. His 528 yards rank fourth in MVFC history.
Defensive Player of the Week
S Jalen Lee, South Dakota State
6-0, 200, Jr., Wentzville, Mo.
Lee ended two Murray State scoring chances with interceptions inside the 20-yard line in South Dakota State’s 35-14 road win on Oct. 18. His first interception came at the SDSU 18 on the opening drive of the game while later adding an interception at the Jackrabbit 15 in the fourth quarter. Lee also registered five tackles for a Jackrabbit defense that forced 10 turnovers in its three league games.
Special Teams Player of the Week
PK Zeke Mata, South Dakota
5-11, 200, R-Sr., San Marcos, Calif.
Mata was the difference in the 17-14 victory at Northern Iowa. Right before the half, Mata drilled a 58-yard field goal to set a program record for longest field goal. The kick proved to be the game-winning score. It tied for the second-longest field goal ever made in MVFC history, one-yard behind the conference record. For Mata, he’s now a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals in his career from 50+ yards with all three field goals being made from 50+ yards.
Newcomer of the Week
DB Kimal Clark, Indiana State
5-10, 195, R-Sr., Lackawanna, N.Y.
Clark recorded a game-high 15 tackles and added 0.5 tackles-for-loss as the redshirt senior safety played a key role in the Sycamores’ Saturday contest against No. 1/1 North Dakota State. Clark, who is second in the MVFC in both total tackles (73) and tackles per game (10.43), recorded eight of his 15 tackles in the first half as the Sycamores battled the Bison to a standstill over the first 30 minutes. He recorded his lone tackle-for-loss in the second quarter as a key stop that ended an NDSU drive, while he dotted the field throughout the second half following the two-hour rain delay at Memorial Stadium.
Offensive Lineman of the Week
OL Liam Becher, North Dakota
6-7, 320, Jr., Iowa City, Iowa
In the 38-19 win at No. 12 Southern Illinois, Liam Becher and North Dakota’s offensive line helped North Dakota pile up 311 yards on the ground and four rushing scores in the victory.
