Brungard’s Record-Setting Day Leads Penguins to 56-17 Victory Over Robert Morris
Youngstown, Ohio – Junior Beau Brungard set the Youngstown State and Missouri Valley Football Conference single-game rushing records by a quarterback with 264 yards to lead the YSU football team to a 56-17 victory over Robert Morris on Saturday at Stambaugh Stadium.
With the win, the Penguins improve to 2-0 on the season while the Colonials fall to 0-2.
Brungard, who accounted for five touchdowns and 386, scored four touchdowns on the ground on rushes of 72, 4, 20 and 28 yards, and he passed for 122 yards on 12-of-16 passing with a touchdown.
His 264 yards set the Stambaugh Stadium rushing record, ranks tied for third on the Youngstown State single-game rushing list and are the most since Marcus Mason ran for 265 in 2006. He also became the first Youngstown State quarterback to run for four touchdowns in a game.
Offensively, the Penguins amassed 593 totals yards, including 424 yards on the ground which ranks 10th in school history.
Max Tomczak led the Penguins receiving corps with five catches for 69 yards and a touchdown while Mike Solomon had four catches for 48 yards.
The Penguins' defense was stifling and allowed just 233 total yards, including just 41 rushing yards. Mike Well recorded five tackles, two tackles for loss, and recovered a fumble.
After the Colonials kicked a field goal on the game's opening drive, Youngstown State scored on eight consecutive possessions and scored 56 straight points before Robert Morris posted a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.
RMU took the game's opening drive 46 yards in 11 plays but had to settle for a Jayson Jenkins 46-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead at the 8:19 mark of the first quarter.
On YSU's first drive, Brungard exploded for a 39-yard and a 19-yard toss from Brungard to Tomczak set up the Penguins at the RMU one. Brungard then hit Tomczak on a one-yard touchdown pass with 4:41 left in the first.
Brungard raced 72 yards for a touchdown to put the Penguins up 14-3 with 3:03 left in the opening stanza, and he scored for the second time on a 20-yard scamper to extend the lead to 21-3 with 13:45 to go in the second quarter.
A 78-yard run by Brungard set up a two-yard touchdown plunge by Antuan Gardner that gave the Penguins a 28-3 advantage with 9:41 left before halftime.
Brungard's third touchdown of the game came on a four-yard run at the 1:54 mark.
Just before halftime, Mike Wells recovered a Robert Morris fumble at the Colonial 17, and five plays later Ky "Flash" Wilson scampered in from four yards out to put the Penguins up 42-3.
Brungard became the first Youngstown State quarterback to run for four touchdowns after a 28-yard touchdown scamper to open the third quarter. Tahir Mills' 18-yard touchdown run at the 7:04 mark of the third quarter gave the Penguins a 56-3 lead.
Robert Morris scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns for the final score.
Brungard first YSU quarterback to rush for more than 200 yards in a game
Youngstown State faces Michigan State, Saturday, Sept. 13. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Mich. The game will be aired on 570 WKBN and the Big Ten Network.
